Chinon and its Royal Fortress
The Royal Fortress of Chinon—a complex comprising three castles (Fort du Coudray, Château du Milieu, and Fort Saint-Georges)—is located in the French commune of Chinon, in the Indre-et-Loire department of the Centre-Val de Loire region.
AOC Chinon vineyard
Situated in the heart of the Loire Valley – which boasts the world’s greatest diversity of wines, with 800 km of wine routes, 38,000 hectares of AOP vineyards and 50 appellations – the Chinon wine region is truly unlike any other. A historic and cultural stronghold, Chinon and a large part of its vineyards are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of their exceptional cultural landscape. This well-deserved recognition encourages exploration, for whilst the Chinon vineyard may appear modest because it is not a single, contiguous area, it reveals its true character as you criss-cross the countryside, climb the hillsides, wander through the plains or along the banks of the Vienne, and, above all, as you step inside the cellars to savour its wines. The passionate winegrowers spread across the 26 communes surrounding the town are neither lacking in generosity – offering visitors a warm and memorable welcome – nor in courage, despite the vicissitudes of a trade at the mercy of the weather and a history in which, on numerous occasions, they have had to rebuild everything and start all over again.
